A coke oven is composed of a charring chamber, a combustion chamber, a heat storage chamber, a ramp area, a roof, a foundation, a flue and so on. A coke oven usually has dozens of carbonization and combustion chambers configured one after another, separated by refractory materials. Each combustion chamber has 20 to 30 standing fire channels. Preheated gas (high calorific value gas is not preheated) and air from the heat storage room meet and burn at the bottom of the risers to provide heat to the charring chamber from the side.
The performance of refractory materials, the design of the furnace structure, and the quality of the furnace masonry are key factors in determining the life of a coke oven. During the operation cycle, most of the masonry is not easy to be repaired thermally, therefore, the refractory materials used for furnace construction must be able to adapt to the requirements of the coke-making production process and be durable. Based on the characteristics of coke production, the refractory materials used in the construction of the furnace, has its own basic requirements, different parts of the coke oven body, the task undertaken by the temperature, bearing the structural load, suffered mechanical damage and media erosion, etc. are different, so the refractory materials used in various parts of the refractory materials should have different properties.
Coke oven refractories should have the following main features:
